MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team came back to take the doubles point on their way to a 7-0 win over Samford Thursday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the victory, the Jaguars improved to 8-4 on the year, while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-3.
"The guys really stepped up," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "We just came back from a couple of losses, and today was very important."
To start doubles,
Eduardo Lourido Sanchez and
Jake Faundez defeated
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 6-3 at No. 3.
USA bounced back when
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) and
Oliver Gingras (Quebec, Canada) dropped
Trey Carter and
Leonard Gerch 6-3 at No. 1.
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and
Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) secured the doubles point by beating
Fares Kilani and
Justin Ghavami 6-4 at No. 2.
"Doubles was very tough," Brochu said. "It was very close, but we played tough and closed it."
In the singles portion, Srkala topped Carter 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, and at No. 1, Jacobs bested Kilani 6-3, 6-0 to give the Jags an early 3-0 lead.
Noyon clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gerch at No. 4.
"We had the momentum, and we never gave it up even when Samford fought back," said Brochu. "They never gave up, but today we were just 100 percent focused."
At No. 6,
Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France) won 6-2, 6-4 over Faundez, and
Dallas Teague (Spanish Fort, Ala.) defeated
Lourido Sanchez in a tight 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), (10-7) decision at No. 5. Troglia finished the match with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 3.
"The goal was to put ourselves in a position to win and stick to the plan," said Brochu. "All six guys did that today."
The Jaguars return to action Friday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Oxford to take on Ole Miss.
