NEW ORLEANS – Brandon McKee tied a career high and school game record with four punts inside the 20-yard line in the University of South Alabama football team's win this weekend, and for that effort he was selected the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement Monday.
The senior is the fourth Jaguar to receive a weekly conference award this fall, but the first to do so on special teams. Dallas Davis and Roman Buchanan were chosen the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week after helping the Jaguars open the year with a victory at Mississippi State, and Cole Garvin was named the Offensive Player of the Week following USA's win over nationally-ranked San Diego State.
It's the first time in his career McKee has earned weekly recognition from the Sun Belt.
He had all four punts in the Jaguars' win over Georgia State downed inside the 20-yard line, a total that was his most of the season. McKee averaged 37.5 yards per kick, with the Panthers starting drives at their own 12, 16, 19 and nine yards lines and failing to cross the GSU-30 on each possession before giving the ball back to South.
McKee has now had 50 kicks downed inside the opposition's 20-yard line in his career — which ranks second in program history — including 16 this year as he moved up to second on the season record list with his efforts in the GSU contest. He currently leads the conference and is 10th in the nation averaging a career-best 45.40 yards per punt, and his efforts have the Jags first in the Sun Belt in punt return defense and second in net punting with the team among the top 10 in the country in both categories.
USA (4-4, 1-4 SBC) will visit Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at 4 p.m. (CDT).
