No. 73 WOMEN’S TENNIS RALLIES TO DEFEAT FURMAN

Results

GREENVILLE, S.C.
– The No. 73 University of South Alabama women's tennis team came back from a 3-0 deficit to win four straight singles contests and beat Furman 4-3 Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

"It was an extremely gutsy performance by the girls today," USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. "It's never easy to climb out of a 3-0 hole on the road but extremely impressive from a mental side in doing so today."

The doubles portion began with Alexandria Stiteler and Cinta Maria Papke losing to Blair Martin and Gabby Rodriguez 6-4 at No. 2, followed by Paula Sanchez and Laura Matuskova falling to Harper Cawell and Karlee Bryde 6-4 at No. 3 to give Furman the doubles point.

In singles, Furman took the first two contests to give them a 3-0 lead. Martin defeated Monica Mitta 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3, and Bryde beat Papke 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.

The Jaguars came back and won the next four contests – two of them in straight sets – to clinch the victory. Stiteler was blanked in the first set 6-0, but took the next two in a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Speaks at No. 1, and No. 86 Valkova outlasted Weymouth 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2.

Matuskova beat Caswell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 to give the Jaguars the lead, and Meszarosova sealed the victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Rodriguez at No. 5.

"We have a long way to go in order to play the quality of tennis we want to play but I am proud today of the fight and competitiveness we showed," said Keyser.

The Jaguars return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when they travel to College Station, Texas to take on Texas A&M.
