NEW ORLEANS – After connecting on all five kicks in the University of South Alabama football team's season-opening win Saturday, Aleem Sunanon was voted the Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
It's the second time the junior placekicker has received the honor — he was also recognized on Sept. 16, 2013 — making him the first player in program history to collect the award more than once.
A native of Orlando, Fla., Sunanon's nine points were the most recorded by a kicker in the league on the opening weekend of the season, as he converted a pair of field goals and three points-after-touchdowns in the Jaguars' 33-23 victory over Gardner-Webb. That included extending his streak to 10 consecutive field goals made dating back to last season, the second-longest in program history, after he connected from 41 yards out at the end of the third quarter and hit a 28-yard attempt three minutes later to push USA's lead to 10 points.
And, by connecting on all three extra-point tries, Sunanon became the Jags' all-time leader in the category as well with 64 in two-plus seasons.
Sunanon and the Jaguars are set to take on Nebraska on Saturday. The contest — which will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network — will kick off at 7 p.m. (CDT).
