MOBILE, Ala. – Twelve current University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes are winding down their respective summer league seasons.
Cole Billingsley has settled in with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL), and enters the weekend tied for first in the CCBL in triples (2), ranks second in hits (36), and tied for fifth in RBI (15). He leads the Red Sox in hits, doubles (8) and RBI, is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (8), ranks second in walks (11) and runs scored (16) and is fourth in batting average (.303).
Billingsley carries a 12-game hitting streak into the weekend, batting .400 during that span, and has hit safely in every game during the month of July. The Cropwell, Ala., native has hit safely in 22 of 30 games this summer, and tied a season high with three July 15 against the Falmouth Commodores.
Cameron Cummings has appeared in 25 games with the Acadiana Cane Cuttters of the Texas Collegiate League. Cummings is hitting .235 with 11 runs scored, two doubles, nine RBI and one stolen base entering the weekend. He also tossed two scoreless innings on June 25 against the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Jason Cryar closed his summer with the Altamonte Springs Boom of the Florida Collegiate Summer League after appearing in 12 games. Cryar recorded two RBI and one run scored along with three hits in 24 official at-bats.
Right-hander Justin Flores was selected to the Valley Baseball League (VBL) All-Star Game, held on July 12 in Harrisonburg, Va., as a member of the North roster where he pitched one scoreless relief inning with a pair of strikeouts. Flores is 1-1 with two saves in 14 appearances with the Charles Town Cannons of the VBL. He has posted a 2.57 ERA with 20 strikeouts against 14 walks in 14 innings pitched, and tossed 12 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in his first 12 appearances.
Left-hander Austin Stephens, a teammate of Flores' with the Cannons, went 0-1 in five appearances – four of which were starts – and struck out 12 batters in 15 1/3 innings pitched before closing his summer. The southpaw tossed a season-high five innings and allowed just one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks on June 22 against the Winchester Royals, but did not factor in the decision.
Right-hander John Barr, a 2015 redshirt at USA, leads the Winchester Royals of the VBL in saves (5), and is 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA in 13 appearances. Barr has struck out 19 batters and issued just four walks in 17 2/3 innings pitched, and has recorded saves in three of his last four appearances. He has not allowed a run in nine of the 13 games in which he has appeared, and has recorded at least one strikeout in 10 of 13 appearances.
Right-hander Seth Tatman leads the Piedmont Pride of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League in ERA (0.73). Tatman has appeared in eight games, and struck out six batters against two walks in 12 1/3 innings. He enters the weekend having tossed nine consecutive scoreless innings. Tatman has not allowed a run in seven of his eight appearances this summer. He has limited the opposition to a .200 batting average, and has posted a 0.89 WHIP.
Right-hander Matt Peacock is 2-0 with one save for the Madisonville Miners of the Ohio Valley Baseball League, while left-hander J.A. Harville is 1-1 with one start.
Kevin Moore, Matt Sharp and Danny Sirven are competing with the Miami Aces of the Gold Coast Collegiate League, however, statistics are not available.
