South Alabama Snaps No. 14 Coastal’s Near Year-Long SBC Win Streak; Evens Series After 15-2 Victory

CONWAY, S.C. - South Alabama (19-12, 6-5 SBC) snapped No. 14 Coastal Carolina's (22-8, 10-1 SBC) Sun Belt Conference win streak of 32 games in a huge offensive performance to fuel the 15-2 victory on Friday night in Conway. The previous conference loss was on April 6, 2025 to Arkansas State.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Stewart Puckett wasted no time and tagged his fifth homer of the season in the first inning in two-run fashion to give the Jags a lead they wouldn't look back on.
  • Back-to-back doubles from Marc Stephens and Rett Johnson powered the Jaguar three-spot in the following frame. Brennon Wright cashed in a sac fly in the inning.
  • Ryland Bozenhard delivered 3.2 innings of competitive work, allowing just one earned run alongside four strikeouts.
  • Two Jaguar runs crossed in the fifth thanks to Blake Guerin's eleventh homer of the season hit to left center field and collected his 34th RBI, plating Stewart Puckett who reached on a single.
  • Jaxon Shineflew entered in the fourth for Ryland Bozenhard, who escaped a bases loaded, two-out jam in the inning. The lone earned run allowed by Shineflew came in the fifth inning, but would not leave him fazed as he would shut down the Chants' offense in 5.1 innings of work with four strikeouts. The junior would retire the side in order three different times in the win.
  • Guerin tallied a third RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, before the Jags tacked on three more in the visitor half of the seventh by way of RBI singles from Rett Johnson, Duncan Mathews, and Stewart Puckett.
  • Puckett would get one more at-bat in the ninth when he collected his season-high fourth hit and fourth RBI of the evening. Robert Miranda followed suit and plated two when he shot a single back up the middle with the bases loaded. The fifteenth Jaguar run scored when Guerin crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the ninth.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"A lot of character on this team, a lot of energy in the dugout. Good pitching and defense helps you win baseball games and that's what we had tonight. Bozenhard fell behind some guys but made some huge pitches. Games are won and lost well before that 27th out is recorded and I felt as though the game was on the line in the fourth inning, and Shineflew did what Shineflew does. Our guys came out and did a great job against an elite club. We got our work cut out for us tomorrow. You want to enjoy this one, but you really can't. Coastal isn't going anywhere and they are who they are for a reason. We'll have to be as good as today."

ON DECK
Saturday's series finale is scheduled for first pitch at 10:00 a.m. (CT). Daniel Gonzalez (3-2, 2.97 ERA) is scheduled to make his eighth start for South while right-hander Jackson Smallets (0-0, 2.63 ERA) is the probable for the Chanticleers.
