MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team will look to extend its win streak when it takes on Jackson State Tuesday and No. 57 Tulane Wednesday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars, who are 16-0 this season, will honor its two seniors,
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) prior to Tuesday's contest. Both matches will start at 2 p.m.
"This is somewhat by design, finishing the season off with some quality matches," head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "Hopefully it puts us in situations that we'll find ourselves during the conference tournament. By getting these matches under our belt, it will make us match-fit leading into the tournament."
USA kept its streak alive last weekend with a pair of shutout victories over Sun Belt competition, defeating Appalachian State and Georgia Southern 7-0 in Atlanta.
Each of the team's last three wins have been shutouts, and the Jags have dropped just three points in their last six matches, five of which have come against league opponents.
Martin saw her singles win streak reach double digits (10) last weekend after losing two games combined in victories over
Melissa Machado of Appalachian State (6-2, 6-0) and
Lauren Mueller of Georgia Southern (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, Martin has yet to experience defeat, boasting a 7-0 mark with
Michaela Meszarosova on the No. 2 court.
Newton is tied for second on the team with Martin with 14 singles wins, and is 12-0 in doubles with three different partners, including 8-0 at No. 1 with sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia).
"They've meant so much, not just from a playing standpoint because their records speaks for themselves, but they came to this program at a stage when we were building it from scratch, and they were there from the ground up as we've rebuilt it the last four years," Keyser said.
Tuesday will be just the second meeting between USA and JSU. South Alabama defeated Jackson State 7-0 last season in Mobile.
The Green Wave enter Wednesday with a 16-7 mark, but have lost two of their last three outings after going 8-1 in a nine-match stretch.
South Alabama leads the all-time series 26-12, but has lost the last six, including five by a 6-1 scoreline.
