NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion took the doubles point and three singles matches to defeat the University of South Alabama men's tennis team 4-3 on Friday afternoon Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
The Monarchs, ranked No. 70 in the nation, improved to 13-2 and snapped the Jaguars three-match win streak. South Alabama, ranked No. 66, dropped to 11-8.
"We had a very tough match today," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "We knew that after beating them in the Middle Tennessee Shootout five days ago, Old Dominion would be looking for revenge."
After securing the doubles point,
Adam Moundir and
Zvonimir Podvinski gave the Monarchs a 3-0 lead with wins at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively. Moundir topped junior
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 6-2, 6-1, and Podvinski defeated junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) 6-3, 6-3.
"Going into singles, we felt good," said Brochu. "Playing indoors, we knew it would be a different match. Once again, we had many three-set matches. We fought very hard, but we needed one more win."
Junior
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) picked up the first point for USA with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over
Michael Weindl at the No. 2 spot.
With the match at 3-1, Old Dominion's
Theophile Lanthiez edged senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-1 on court 5 to clinch the win for the Monarchs.
Senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), ranked No. 98, outlasted No. 102
Carlos Lopez Villa 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 1, and sophomore
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) edged
Javier Jover Maestre 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the No. 4 flight.
"Daniel and Tuki played such great matches today," said Brochu. "Winning in a long three sets is a great feeling. These guys are peaking at the right time for the Sun Belt Conference tournament."
In doubles action, Troglia and Jacobs put the Jags on the board with an 8-2 victory at No. 3, but Leitner and Gruindelingh, ranked No. 72, fell 8-5 to Moudir and Weindl on the No. 1 court, and Srkala and Belda lost 9-7 to Lopez Villa and Jover Maestre in the No. 2 flight.
"Just like in the previous match, the doubles point was key," said Brochu. "Our No. 1 had a bad day and were struggling with their own serves. Our No. 3 played almost a perfect match. It came down to the No. 2 just like five days ago. It is hard to swallow losing so close, but the guys fought so hard."
South Alabama is back in action Saturday morning at 9 a.m. as they take on UAB in Norfolk, Va.
