WOMEN’S TENNIS RETURNS HOME FOR WEEKEND MATCHES

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team looks to extend its undefeated record hosting Southern Mississippi and Samford this weekend at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars advanced to a 6-0 mark after a successful weekend in Kennesaw, Ga., claiming matches against Charleston Southern (4-3) and Kennesaw State (7-0). They return home to face Southern Miss Friday at 1 p.m. and then take on Samford Saturday at 11 a.m.

"I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match up," said Jaguar head coach Jaco Keyser. "Each practice and each regular match is a good opportunity for us to improve and prepare ourselves for postseason play."

Senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) both bring identical 6-0 spring records into the weekend. Newton has won four matches in straight sets, but was stretched to three her last time out against Isabela Castro of Kennesaw State.

Matuskova has yet to play in a third set in 2015 and has dropped just one game in her last two outings.

USA leads the all-time series with USM 19-0. The teams met last February when the Jags defeated the Eagles 5-2, dropping just two singles matches at the Nos. 2 and 6 spots.

Southern Miss enters Friday's match 7-3 on the season, 2-2 away from home, after a 5-2 victory at Southeastern Louisiana Sunday. The Golden Eagles are a combined 16-1 in singles at the bottom two spots in the lineup thanks in part to Elena Roca's 9-0 mark.

Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen are 7-1 as a team at No. 1 doubles.

The Jaguars hold an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series against Samford. The Bulldogs are 5-5 on the season, most recently blanking Louisiana-Lafayette 7-0 Sunday. They have yet to win a match on the road in 2015, but were ranked as high as No. 71 earlier this year.

Samford also boasts a tough No. 1 doubles team as Carita Moolman and Stephanie N'Tcha are also 7-1 with a seven-match win streak.

"Bottom line, it's a great opportunity to keep improving and figure out what needs work as we build towards postseason," said Keyser.
