JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of South Alabama senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) earned his second win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season, but No. 51 North Florida took the 4-1 victory over the men's tennis team Wednesday at the UNF Tennis Complex.

The Jaguars move to 7-4 in their spring campaign, while the Ospreys improve their win streak to six matches, making their overall record 9-2.

"Today was disappointing," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "We had a great opportunity in front of us, but some guys didn't play up to par."

No. 84 Leitner picked up his ninth win of the season with a 5-5, (ret.) victory over No. 85 Jack Findel-Hawkins at the No. 1 spot.

"We had a great showing by our top guy," said Brochu. "Daniel was playing very solid at No. 1."

After taking the doubles point, North Florida claimed three singles matches, following Leitner's win, in the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 flights. Norbert Nemcsek defeated junior Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) 6-3, 7-5, followed by Lasse Muscheites' 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over freshman Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada).

Zach Goldberg clinched the win for the Ospreys when he outlasted junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

"We fought hard in singles, but we came up short," said Brochu. "Some guys had a slow start but came back and took their match to a third set. It is good to see our guys fight so hard and push the match to the limit."

In doubles action, UNF earned the point with a pair of 6-1 victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Caio Gomes and Yannick Zuern dropped Troglia and sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia), while Goldberg and Muscheites topped Gingras and junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic).

"We got outplayed at Nos. 2 and 3 in doubles," said Brochu. "We were on our way to a win at No. 1, but we got intimidated at the other two positions and played scared. It is disappointing because we feel doubles is one of our strengths this year.

"Overall, we fought hard, but it is tough to beat a good, ranked team like North Florida. We need to have a better start at some positions. The intensity at practice needs to be better."

South Alabama is back in action Tuesday, March 10 as they head home to take on Southern Illinois at 2 p.m.
