MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team gutted out three singles matches in three sets to defeat No. 61 Old Dominion 4-2 Sunday and win the 2015 Middle Tennessee Shootout.
The Jaguars win their third straight and move to 11-7 on the year. The Monarchs have their five-match win streak snapped and drop to 12-2.
"It was a great win for our program today," USA head coach
Nick Brochu said. "It is the first time we've won the Shootout since I've been at South. We reached the final last year but we couldn't deal the deal.
"We played for more than four hours last night until midnight and only got six hours of sleep before we got back on the court for the final, but the guys wanted it. I wasn't sure how much we had left in the tank but I knew we would give everything."
Two of the Jags' final three victories came after losing the first set.
The Monarchs won on courts 3 and 4 by the score of 6-2, 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead. Senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) evened the score at 2-2 with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 102
Carlos Lopez Villa, before junior
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) came back to defeat
Adam Moundir 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on the No. 2 court.
"ODU came back strong in singles and we found ourselves down on five courts. But even though we lost many first sets, we stayed focused and fought back. Daniel and Tim showed so much heart coming back from so far down and win in such a big fashion. They were the vocal leaders today."
Freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec, Canada) completed the Jaguar comeback at No. 6 when he got past
Zvonimir Podvinski 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
"Once again, our freshman Olivier came up big clinching the match for us," Brochu said.
The Jaguars earned the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead at the top two spots in the lineup. The No. 72 team of Leitner and junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated Moundir and
Michael Weindel 6-3 at No. 1, and senior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and Srkala downed Lopez Villa and
Javier Jover Maestre 6-4 at No. 2.
"We started so well winning the doubles point," Brochu stated. "ODU is a good team with aggressive doubles teams but our guys stepped up."
The two teams will meet in a rematch on Friday in Norfolk, Va.
