MOBILE, Ala. – After setting a school record with its twelfth-straight win to open the season, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team embarks on a road trip to Louisiana for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday.
The Jaguars defeated Troy 6-1 Sunday to record the best start to a season in school history. They look to extend their undefeated mark when they take on Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Louisiana-Lafayette to face the Ragin' Cajuns Saturday at 11 a.m.
"We have had a good week of practice," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser, "and are looking forward to seeing if we can improve our match-day execution as we start to get deeper into the regular season."
Sophomore
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) claimed her second Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Week award on Wednesday after going 4-0 in singles and doubles.in the Jags' 6-1 wins over Georgia State and Troy. She is 9-1 in her last 10 singles matches and 8-1 in her last nine outings in doubles.
South Alabama leads the all-time series with Louisiana Tech 9-0, but haven't met since the 2000 Sun Belt Conference Championships when the Jags won 5-0. The Bulldogs improved to 5-7 overall after blanking Jackson State 4-0 Wednesday.
Louisiana Tech's
Jazmin Britos is on a six-match winning streak with a 9-3 mark at the No. 2 position in singles and 3-0 when paired with
Taylor Capannolo at No. 3 doubles.
USA holds a 30-5 advantage in the all-time series with Louisiana-Lafeyette. The teams met last March in Mobile, with the Jags earning a 6-1 victory. ULL is now 3-12 overall after falling 5-2 to Lamar Wednesday, claiming their only two points in singles on the Nos. 2 and 5 courts.
Kelly Drew is 8-2 in singles at flights 1-4, winning all but one match in straight sets, and started the year with six consecutive victories.
