MOBILE, Ala.
– The University of South Alabama women's tennis team set a school record with its twelfth win to start the season Saturday in a 6-1 victory over Troy at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The win moved the Jaguars to 12-0, while the Trojans are now 7-7 overall.

"It was a scary match," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. "We played great doubles - we've been on a roll in doubles - and in singles, there for awhile, Troy came out and played at a very high level in some spots and it looked pretty close, I mean, 6-1 does not tell the story today."

USA claimed the doubles point to get off to a quick 1-0 lead. After sophomore Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) and junior Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Colombia) downed Brooke Durden and Sanae Ohta 8-1 on the No. 1 court, senior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and junior Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) secured the point defeating Linnea Skymberg and Jiayuan Xue 8-3 at No. 2.

Sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) put the Jags up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Durden at the No. 5 spot, extending her singles record to 11-0 this season. Huynh then claimed the Trojans first and only point at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia).

After Mitta downed Ohta 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, Martin secured the match win for the Jags with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Margot De Haan on the No. 6 court.

Senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) battled back from a 4-6 deficit in the first set to defeat Xue 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. After a long battle at the No. 4 spot, Meszarosova rallied back and claimed the last point for the Jaguars with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-2) win over Skymberg.

"That's a bonus," Keyser said about the win streak. "I mean, it's great and I'm happy for them and I think it really excites them, but I'm trying to keep the message the same. It's on a day-to-day basis what we want to do during practices. We've been doing it for a long time now, so hopefully we don't get sidetracked and hopefully we mature enough to handle success. But I won't lie and say I'm not excited about it."

South Alabama returns to action Friday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Louisiana Tech.
