MOBILE, Ala. – Following a successful weekend in Jacksonville, Fla., the University of South Alabama women's tennis team will host Georgia State Friday at 2 p.m. and Troy Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars extended their record to 10-0 after defeating George Washington 6-1 and North Florida 4-2. This marks their best start since going 11-0 in 2008.
"Practice has been good this week," said Jaguar head coach
Jaco Keyser. "This weekend is another great opportunity to apply our practices and keep improving as we move towards postseason."
Bolstered by tough pairs at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, the Jags have yet to give up a doubles point this season, losing just three matches. No. 80 sophomore
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) and senior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) are 4-0 on the No. 1 court, while senior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and sophomore
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) are 5-0 at No. 2.
Matuskova remains undefeated in singles play as well. She has won all nine matches in straight sets, playing at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions.
USA holds a 10-3 advantage in the all-time series against Georgia State. The teams last met in the finals of the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championships, where the Jags fell 4-1.
GSU enters the weekend 7-7 overall, 0-4 on the road. The Panthers will be taking the court for the first time in almost two weeks after being shut out by No. 21 Purdue. They also bring a ranked doubles team playing on the No. 1 court. No. 58
Tarani Kamoe and
Linn Timmermann are 5-5, but have lost their last four matches.
Chaimaa Roudami is 8-3 in singles, winning seven matches in straight sets.
USA also leads the all-time series with Troy 9-4, but lost 4-2 when they last met in 2013. The Trojans are 7-5 overall, most recently claiming both doubles and three singles matches in a 4-1 victory over Mercer.
Anja Cosovic and
Trang Huynh extended their doubles winning streak to five matches and are 10-1 overall after defeating Mercer's
Grace Korta and
Roxy Bartz 8-2 at No. 1. Huynh also continued her streak in singles downing
Xandra Fougner 6-1, 6-0 at the No.1 spot. She is 9-3 at Nos. 1 and 2, with all wins in straight sets.
"It goes without saying that we want to win every match we play," said Keyser, "but more important are the habits that we establish during matches and especially during stressful situations within matches."
