WOMEN’S TENNIS HEADS TO JACKSONVILLE FOR PAIR OF MATCHES

MOBILE, Ala. - After a successful weekend at home, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team travels to Jacksonville, Fla. with hopes to extend its perfect record in spring play.

The Jaguars moved to 8-0 after wins against Southern Miss (7-0) and Samford (5-2) this past weekend. They take on George Washington on Thursday at 1 p.m. and North Florida Saturday at 10 a.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex. Live stats for the North Florida match can be found here.

Led by senior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia), the Jaguars have yet to lose a doubles point this season. The pair is 3-0 at the No. 1 spot, most recently ending the seven-match winning streak of Stephanie N'Tcha and Carita Moolman of Samford.

Newton and sophomore Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) enter this week's matches 8-0 in singles play. Newton has won the last two matches in straight sets, while Matuskova has yet to play three sets this spring.

Thursday will be the first meeting between USA and George Washington. The Colonials post an overall 4-4 record, dropping their last match 6-0 to a fifth-ranked Virginia team Sunday.

Teodora Radosavljevic holds a 5-3 record at No. 1 singles, while Marie-Louise Decamps and Lana Robins are 5-1 at the bottom two positions in doubles.

USA leads the all-time series with North Florida 6-2. The teams last met Feb. 24, 2013 when the Jags fell 6-1 to the Ospreys, claiming their only point on the No. 6 court in singles.

UNF extended its winning streak to seven with a 5-2 victory over Furman on Tuesday. They are now 7-2 overall with their only losses coming from ranked opponents.

Michelle Valdez is 8-0 in singles, playing at four different positions this season. Quetzali Vazquez, paired with Esther Zuniga, have won four straight doubles matches with an overall record of 7-2.

George Washington and North Florida face each other Wednesday at 2 p.m. before taking on the Jags.
