MOBILE, Ala. – Picking up their second 7-0 victory of the season, the University of South Alabama men's tennis team defeated Alabama State on Tuesday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars earned their fifth straight win and improved to 6-2 overall, while the Hornets fell to 0-4 in their spring season.
"We feel really good right now," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "We've played eight matches so far. We were coming off of a big win this past weekend, so the guys were very confident heading into the match today. We need to stay playing at this level."
After sweeping doubles, the Jags picked up five singles matches in straight sets. Junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) put USA up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Patrik Cvik at the No. 1 spot. Senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), ranked No. 71 in the nation, quickly followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Takura Mlambo on the No. 2 court.
Junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) clinched the match for South Alabama when he dropped Divijay Singh Naruka 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 flight.
Sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) added to his four-match win streak when he topped Ronald Mataba 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3. Freshman Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) downed Jarred Thompson 6-2, 6-3 on the No. 5 court and junior Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) closed out the day for the Jags when he edged Karlo Skovrc 6-3, 5-7, (10-2) at the No. 4 spot.
"Individually, each guy knows they need to step up," said Brochu. "They work on stuff individually, and then when we come together they really push each other. They understand that everyone needs to work hard and do their part to get the win."
In doubles action, Gruindelingh and Gingras put the Jaguars on the board with a 6-2 win over Mataba and Adam Coyne in the No. 3 flight, and Leitner and Jacobs secured the point for USA when they outlasted Mlambo and Skovrc 7-5 at No. 2.
"I think doubles is working really well for us right now," said Brochu. "We have been trying so many different combinations, and we seem to always have success in doubles so that is big."
South Alabama is back in action Sunday, Feb. 22, when they travel to Hattiesburg to take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss.
