MOBILE, Ala
. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team swept doubles and took five singles matches in straight sets to earn a 7-0 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars improved to 3-2 overall and have won three out of their last four matches. The Gamecocks dropped to 1-3 in their spring campaign.

"Today was good," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "I don't think any of our six guys played their best tennis today, but it's early in the season. There were some close matches. Even though the final score was 7-0, Jacksonville State played a good match. It could have been a closer match, but the guys took care of business on the big points."

South Alabama took the doubles point on courts 2 and 3 after dropping a combined six games. Juniors Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated Dylan Gee and Jaryd Reese 6-3 at No. 2. Senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and freshman Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) followed with a 6-3 victory over Felipe Wenzel and Mathias Chaim at the No. 3 spot.

"This year we have a lot of potential in doubles," said Brochu. "We have been changing the doubles lineup and trying new pairs, and every time we have a good response from the guys. I think we are improving a lot in doubles."

In singles action, USA picked up a quick win on the No. 1 court when Srkala topped Jeff Wendler-Filho 6-4, 6-2 and Leitner downed Chaim 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 to give the Jags a 3-0 lead.

Gingras clinched the match for the Jaguars when he defeated Felipe Diaz 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 flight.

"In singles, we have been having a really good start in every match," said Brochu. "That is key. We need to learn to carry the momentum into the second set and make sure they don't come back. I think we need to work on closing the matches a little faster and easier."

Junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) picked up his third straight win with a 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) victory over Reese on the No. 4 court. Gruindelingh edged Wenzel 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5. Sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) outlasted Gee 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 3 spot to pick up the final point for USA.

South Alabama is back in action Sunday, Feb. 1 when they host Jackson State (9:30 a.m.) and Alabama State (2 p.m.)
