SOCCER WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT, DEFEATS ALABAMA A&M 6-2

Box Score NORMAL, Ala. – The University of South Alabama soccer team got five second-half goals to win its fourth consecutive match of the season, 6-2 against Alabama A&M Sunday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field.

The win streak is the longest for the program since winning seven in a row in September 2011.

"I was proud of the girls after going down a goal early," USA head coach Graham Winkworth said. "They showed a lot of character to come back and battle. A sign of a good team is to get a result when they're not playing particularly well, so I was proud of the girls' attitude there.

"I've got to do a better job of preparing the team for games. Obviously we were on a high from Friday night's victory in Starkville, but I have to do a better job of preparing them."

Freshman Sophie Haywood (Hull, England) came off the bench to score a brace and classmate Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) tallied a goal and an assist, also in a reserve role.

"I was pleased with the girls that started the game; they all worked extremely hard," Winkworth said. "There were a lot of changes and they had not had as much time to practice as the others but they did well in a difficult environment. The girls that came off the bench today gave us a spark."

Adding to the Jags' offensive onslaught was junior Jordan Duncan (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), who recorded a goal and two assists, and freshmen Rio Hardy (Workington, England) and Alyssa Pejic (Pensacola, Fla.), who also found the back of the net. Pejic's strike was the first of her career.

"Chardé got herself on the scoresheet again, it was nice to see Jordan and Rio get on there as well and I was proud that Alyssa got her first collegiate goal from the left-back position," Winkworth noted.

South Alabama had to rally for the first time this season after Alabama A&M got on the board in the 18th minute on a goal from Margret Sesay. The Bulldogs led for the next 17 minutes—the longest the Jaguars have trailed this season—until Hannah tied the score at 35:01 with her team-leading seventh goal of the year, and the two squads went into the break tied at 1-1.

"We haven't been behind all that much, other than about 10 minutes at the end of a game all year, so this was the first time we've really faced adversity so early in the game and obviously we responded really well," Winkworth said. "We got the equalizer and really took the game to them."

The scoring after the break started early, as Haywood recorded the first of her two goals less than six minutes into the second half and added another just under three minutes later on an assist from Hannah.

Another quick double-strike later in the half put the contest away. Pejic and Duncan scored less than a minute apart in the 78th and 79th minutes, respectively, and Hardy finished off the Bulldogs at 84:45.

"It's always nice to get a win," said Winkworth. "I would have been nicer to be a little tighter in the back, but like I said, that's down to me and the girls worked extremely hard. I must do a better job at preparing the team for difficult games on the road.

"At the same time, we're not looking at the result, we're looking at the performance and we have a very tough five games approaching us at home and it's important that we have a strong week of training this week."

The Jaguars start a five-match homestand Friday at 7 p.m. against North Florida, part of the Jaguar Classic. Francis Marion and Troy will kick off the festivities at 4 p.m.
