HANNAH’S BRACE GIVES SOCCER WIN AT MISSISSIPPI STATE

Box Score STARKVILLE, Miss. – Freshman Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) scored her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season, providing the University of South Alabama soccer team with all the offense it would need in a 2-0 victory at Mississippi State Friday night.

Hannah recorded the first brace of her young career to give the Jaguars their second consecutive win over the Bulldogs, and fourth overall in the series.

USA has won three in a row overall and five of its last six outings—all by shutout—to improve to 5-2 on the year. MSU drops to 2-4.

"I thought we played very well tonight," Jaguar head coach Graham Winkworth said. "In the first half, Mississippi State came out very strong but we were very organized defensively. They did cause us a few problems, but once we made some adaptations in the second half, I thought we dealt with that a lot better. We worked a little harder on the attitude side of defending in the second half; we were organized in the first half but we weren't sharp on our attitude side of defending. We managed to win a couple of balls and were clinical in front of the goal, so I was very happy."

Both of Hannah's strikes came late in the second half. Her first broke a scoreless deadlock at the 71:07 mark on a breakaway that hit the inside of the left post. Her second came with just 12 seconds left in regulation to double the Jaguars' lead and put the match away.

"She was excellent tonight," Winkworth said. "She had extra motivation playing close to home and had a lot of fans in the crowd. I was also pleased for her because she's worked so hard since she's been here; she didn't come in quite as ready and we wanted her—and she knows it—but she's had a wonderful attitude in getting herself physically fitter and tonight is the reward for that. It was nice to give her a hug at the end of the game and tell her congratulations because she deserves it."

Sophomore Sarah Hay (Waxahachie, Texas) went the distance in goal for the Jags, making six saves for the team's fifth shutout of the season.

"We had to press in the right places and it's hard work to press the opposing team on a big field. Their attitude toward the work that needed to be put in was excellent and I was proud of them," Winkworth noted. "I was proud of Sarah as well because goalkeeping isn't just about making saves; some of the strong teams out of the likes of the SEC put a lot of direct balls into the penalty area, so it's also about playing crosses and being a commanding goalkeeper and I thought she did a wonderful job tonight."

South Alabama outshot Mississippi State 16-14, while the Bulldogs had the advantage in attempts on goal, 7-6.

The Jaguars take a day off before returning to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. at Alabama A&M.
