KENNESAW STATE PIPS SOCCER ON LATE GOAL

Box Score TROY, Ala. – Despite a 19-6 shot advantage, the University of South Alabama soccer team allowed the winning Kennesaw State goal in the final 10 minutes to fall 2-1 Sunday afternoon at the Trojan Classic hosted by Troy.

The loss evens the Jaguars' record at 2-2 while the Owls earn their first win of the season and stand at 1-2-1.

Maggie Gaughan accounted for both KSU goals.

"It was a game that I thought we started off very well. I don't think Kennesaw State touched the ball in the first 10 minutes," USA head coach Graham Winkworth said. "We got a very good early goal but then made an error and they equalized with their first attack. We're a young team that needs to be able to handle adverse situations. We have to do a better job of letting one event—a goal or whatever—affect our mindset. Unfortunately it did, even though we were the stronger team in the game from a technical standpoint.

"Credit to Kennesaw State. They had a gameplan, they executed it very well, they parked the bus and countered. We've got to have a plan B and obviously we'll spend most of this week working on one, so when teams do put 11 players behind the ball outside their penalty area, we've got a better way of breaking them down."

It took less than four minutes for the Jags to draw first blood. Freshman Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) scored an unassisted goal – her third of the season – at the 3:59 mark to put South Alabama up 1-0.

"She won the ball from their backline, just took it to goal and put it away. It was a very nice, tidy finish," Winkworth said. "I was pleased with how she defended on that occasion for sure."

Kennesaw State answered shortly thereafter when Gaughan scored off a pass from Alma Gardarsdottir at 11:35.

The match remained 1-1 for almost 70 minutes until Gaughan found the back of the net in the 82nd minute after a USA defender and goalkeeper collided to give her the scoring opportunity.

Freshman Courtney Baum (Cumming, Ga.) made three saves in net for the Jags and allowed both goals. KSU's Olivia Sturdivant made five saves.

South Alabama returns home Friday for a 7 p.m. match against Southern Miss.
