Box Score MOBILE, Ala. – A goal with 2.9 seconds left in the second overtime gave the UAB women's soccer team a 2-1 win over the University of South Alabama Friday night at The Cage.
The match was the season opener for both teams.
"It's an awful way to lose and it's tough for them because they're such a young team," USA head coach
Graham Winkworth said. "To work so hard for 109 minutes and 57 seconds and come away with a defeat is tough to take. The fact that the girls are crying right now and their faces are down just shows we've got the right character on this team.
"As the season goes on, we're going to get used to playing with one another and if we combine our workrate with the quality we've got and get used to playing with one another, then we're going to be a very good team."
With the seconds counting down, the Blazers'
Gabrielle Brokamp fed
Sarah Morris with a through-ball down the left channel and Morris put it in the net on her first touch past USA goalkeeper
Sarah Hay (Waxahachie, Texas).
The winning goal was scored on UAB's only shot in the second extra frame.
It took over 73 minutes for either team to find the net until USA freshman
Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) broke the deadlock at the 73:47 mark. Junior
Jordan Duncan (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) won the ball near midfield and hit Hannah with a long pass near the penalty spot for her first collegiate goal.
"It was a great ball in," said Winkworth. "With Jordan's workrate to win the ball and swinging it in, all (Chardé) had to do was put it away because most of the work was done outside from Jordan's hard work."
It took just over three minutes for UAB to knot the score at 1-1. USA gave away possession in its final third and
Paige Hanks muscled the ball from the defender before finding the head of
Johanna Liney with a high cross in the six-yard box.
"I was trying to get the message to them about the next five minutes," Winkworth said. "It is the most dangerous five minutes; whenever there's a goal, or beginning of a half, end of a half, those are big five-minute periods of the game, and unfortunately we showed a little lack of maturity and inexperience and let them back in it."
Both sides attempted 22 shots on the night, with the Blazers putting 15 of those shots on goal to 13 for the Jaguars. Both keepers made 12 saves with each making critical saves to keep their team in the game.
South Alabama takes a day off before returning to the pitch Sunday at 1 p.m. against Nicholls State.
