SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of South Alabama men's and women's track and field teams held onto first and second place, respectively, while four individuals captured all-conference accolades on day two of the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Bobcat Stadium Saturday.
With one day of competition remaining, the Jag men lead the field with 55 team points and sit five points ahead of second-place Texas-Arlington. The women's squad currently holds possession of second place with 63.5 points and trails only Western Kentucky's 81 points.
Noelle Jones and Leah Hixon each posted their second all-SBC performance of the weekend when Jones captured the top prize in the heptathlon and Hixon finished second. Jones tallied a new career-best 5,381 points over the span of two days to help the Jags claim the gold medal in the event for the fifth consecutive season and break the conference-championship-meet record set by USA's Lindsay Schwartz in 2012. Hixon notched a PR as well – aided by the field's top mark in the javelin (47.73m) – with a total of 5,295 points for the runner-up finish. Jones and Hixon now rank second and third, respectively, in Jaguar history in the combined events and have claimed a gold and silver medal apiece so far on the weekend after the senior duo took the top two spots in the javelin on Friday.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Patrick Rohr was awarded all-SBC honors when he placed second overall with a time of 9:23.07 to pick up eight points. Ian Bordelon gained an additional point with his eighth-place finish after crossing the line in a time of 9:49.30.
Garrett Schumacher turned in an all-conference performance in the decathlon, breaking his own school record along the way, with a final tally of 7,086 points for a runner-up finish. It marked the second straight season the senior has medaled in the event, improving upon his third-place performance from last season. Schumacher logged top-five finishes in four of the five segments held Saturday and eight of the 10 events overall.
As the lone Jaguar representative in the women's long jump, freshman Kaitlyn Beans notched a fourth-place finish on a personal-best leap of 6.11m to pick up four team points.
In the women's high jump, Beans, Jones and Jasmine Ferguson teamed up for a 6-7-8 finish to combine for six team points after each cleared 1.61m.
Following an all-league performance in the hammer throw Friday, Adam Patterson was the lone scorer in the men's shot put, posting a mark of 16.03m to place sixth overall and earn three points.
Jones led the way for the women's squad in the shot put, posting a measure of 13.92m to finish eighth overall and earn one point.
In the preliminary round of the men's 800-meter run, Robert Mann (1:54.01) and Justin Housley (1:53.86) each secured spots in Sunday's finals after finishing third and eighth, respectively.
The duo of Tasha Russell and Jones each recorded PRs and finished in the top eight in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter hurdles to advance to Sunday's finals. Russell clocked a time of 13.96 seconds to finish sixth, while Jones posted a time of 14.00 seconds to place eighth. Ravaughn Pope led the men in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles with a PR as well when he finished third with a time of 14.23 seconds to earn a spot in the finals.
Tevin Barnett led the way for the Jags in the men's 400-meter hurdle preliminaries with a personal-record time of 52.40 seconds to finish third and qualify for the finals. Spencer Anderson qualified as well when he placed eighth with a time of 53.17 seconds.
In the preliminary round of the men's 400-meter dash, sophomore Mark Watts clocked in at 47.51 seconds to finish seventh and advance.
The final day of competition will commence at 10 a.m. Sunday, starting with the men's discus. Final results will be posted on the Jaguar athletics website following the conclusion of the meet.
