Box score - Game 1Box score - Game 2MOBILE, Ala. – No. 3 Louisiana-Lafayette swept a doubleheader from University of South Alabama baseball Saturday at Stanky Field to clinch the three-game Sun Belt Conference series.
ULL (45-7, 22-4 SBC) clinched the SBC regular-season title with its game one win, and clinched the three-game set with USA (21-28, 10-15 SBC) with the win in Saturday's nightcap.
Game 1 – Louisiana-Lafayette 5, South Alabama 2ULL right-hander Austin Robichaux (7-2) allowed just two unearned runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks in seven innings to lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a 5-2 series-opening win at Stanky Field. Ryan Wilson tossed two scoreless relief innings, and allowed only one hit to record his sixth save of the season. Jaguar southpaw Locke St. John (6-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with a strikeout and two walks in seven innings.
Caleb Adams went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored to lead ULL at the plate. Blake Trahan added a pair of hits, including a double, and one RBI and a run. Andrew Tindell finished 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Jaguar offense.
Adams led off the top of the second with a double to right-center field, and Jace Conrad followed with a bunt single to third base. Adams scored two pitches later on a passed ball charged to USA catcher Matt Wojciechowski for a 1-0 Cajun lead. Chase Compton reached on a two-out hit by pitch from St. John before the left-hander induced an inning-ending popup to first base off the bat of Dylan Butler.
USA answered with a pair of runs in the bottom-half of the second inning to take a one-run lead. Connor Hawthorne and Hayden Jones reached on consecutive one-out walks issued by Robichaux in the bottom of the second. Garrett DeGallier then reached on a fielding error by Conrad to load the bases for Drew LaBounty, who Robichaux struck out for the second out of the inning. But Tindell followed with a two-out, two-run single back up the middle of the infield to score Hawthorne and Jones and give the Jags a 2-1 lead.
ULL responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to re-take the lead. Blake Trahan doubled to lead off the top of the third, and scored one batter later on an RBI single to center field by Ryan Leonards. Seth Harrison followed with a walk. Leonards and Harrison each moved up one base on a double steal before Adams delivered an RBI double off the right-center wall to plate Trahan and give ULL a 3-2 lead.
St. John hit Michael Strentz with a pitch to lead off the top of the fourth, and Compton moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Butler reached on a one-out walk before Trahan singled to shallow right-center field to score Strentz and double the ULL lead to 4-2. A sacrifice fly to center field by Leonards one batter later scored Butler with the game's final run.
Game 2 – Louisiana-Lafayette 8, South Alabama 7ULL scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning for an 8-7 series-clinching win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
Harrison led off the top of the ninth with a single then stole second. Greg Davis then delivered a two-out RBI single to right field to score Harrison with the game-winning run.
South Alabama faced a 7-0 deficit through six-and-a-half innings. The Jags loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Tindell that was sandwiched between two walks by LaBounty and DeGallier. Cummings followed with an RBI single to right-center field to score LaBounty with the first Jag run of the game. Gleason then delivered a two-run single to right field to score Tindell and DeGallier and cut the Cajun lead to 7-3. Wojciechowski followed with a single to right field to plate Cummings and cut the Jag deficit to three runs. A walk by Hawthorne loaded the bases and put the tying run on base. Jones grounded out to shortstop for the first out of the inning which allowed Gleason to score and cut the ULL lead to 7-5. Knapp then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Wojciechowski and cut the Cajun lead to one run. LaBounty followed with a two-out RBI single to center field to score Hawthorne and tie the game 7-7.
ULL right-hander Reagan Bazar (4-0) earned the win in 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings, and allowed just three hits with one strikeout. Jaguar left-hander James Traylor (1-2) took the loss in 4 2/3 relief innings, allowing only one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk.
ULL loaded the bases with no outs against Jaguar starter Kevin Hill in the top of the second on a pair of singles by Tyler Girouard and Conrad, and a walk by Adams. Davis followed with a grand slam over the left-center field wall to give the Cajuns a 4-0 lead.
Davis reached on a one-out single in the top of the fourth, and scored one batter later on an RBI double to the left-center gap by Kyle Clement to extend the ULL lead to 5-0.
Adams reached on a one-out walk in the top of the fifth, and Conrad followed with a two-run home run to right field to extend the ULL lead to 7-0.
Davis went 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cajuns at the plate. Five Jaguars recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Drew LaBounty who finished with a career-high three hits and drove in one run and scored once. Knapp added two hits and an RBI, and Cummings had two hits – including a double – one RBI and one run scored.
The series will conclude with game three Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stanky Field. Jaguar seniors Matt Bell, Dillon Buhrkuhl and Brandon Hallford will be honored in a pre-game ceremony as part of Senior Day.
