MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team swept doubles and took four singles matches in straight sets to earn a 6-1 win over Old Dominion on Saturday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improved to 15-7 overall and have won five out of their last seven matches. The Monarchs dropped to 12-8 in their spring campaign.
"Today we had a great match," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "Old Dominion is a great team. They've had some big wins this season and they were ranked in the top 75 earlier this year, so this was a really good win for us."
South Alabama took the doubles point on courts 1 and 2 after dropping only a combined five games. Junior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and sophomore
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) improved to 4-0 with an 8-3 win
Darragh Glavin and
Zvonimir Podvinski at No. 2. Junior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and sophomore
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) followed with an 8-2 victory over
Jonas Kuwert and
Dante Terenzio in the No. 1 flight.
"It was very important for us to come out storming in doubles and I think we did that," said Brochu. "It was very impressive to see Manuel and Juan dominating at No. 1. I think that made everyone relax. We started up 1-0 on all three courts by breaking them so that gave us a lot of momentum and we just carried it all the way through doubles."
In singles action, USA picked up a quick win on the No. 4 court when Gruindelingh topped Kuwert 6-4, 6-2 and Belda downed Terenzio 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to give the Jags a 3-0 lead.
"It's great to see guys like Gerhard who take the early lead, keep it and are able to close the match and put us on the board," said Brochu. "That was very reassuring for the team and it gave us a lot of confidence."
Troglia picked up his third straight win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Glavin at the No. 5 spot to clinch the match for South Alabama.
Senior
Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) competed in his first match since March 15 and defeated
Abdoulaye Camara 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
Carlos Lopez Villa, ranked No. 96, claimed the only point for the Monarchs when he outlasted Leitner 7-6 (7-0), 2-6, (10-8) on the No. 1 court. Jacobs edged
Zvonimir Podvinski 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) to pick up the final point for USA.
"Shayann did very good in his first match back," said Brochu. "I thought it was a great match for him to win in straight sets. You always struggle when you come back and I think he handled everything very well today. It's good to have him back."
South Alabama is back in action April 12 when they host Texas-San Antonio at 2 p.m.
