MEN’S TENNIS OPENS THREE-MATCH HOMESTAND WITH OLD DOMINION SATURDAY

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team will begin their final homestand of the season as they host Old Dominion on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The match was originally scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m.

The Jaguars enter the match with a 14-7 mark in their spring campaign, after posting a 2-1 record against Texas-Arlington, DePaul and Middle Tennessee at the Middle Tennessee Shootout.

"I think the Middle Tennessee Shootout was a good tournament for us," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Our No. 1 goal going in was to play competitive in all three matches because it was a very similar format to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In the first round, we got a good win against Texas-Arlington. It was very important for us to set the tone against them since they are new to our conference this year. The match against DePaul was very close. We had plenty of chances to close it early, but at the end of the day we won and made it to the final against MTSU. We started out very flat in doubles in the final. We went from playing the best doubles I've seen all season on Friday to probably the worst on Sunday. I have to give credit to MTSU. They played a very good, solid tournament. Overall, I'm very happy with the outcome of the weekend."

Sophomore Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) went 2-0 at the tournament, including a victory to secure the win over DePaul to send USA to the final against the Blue Raiders. Sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) improved his win streak to five heading into the MTSU match.

"I was very impressed with Juan's performance this past weekend," said Brochu. "He's been struggling a little bit this season. He has had his ups and downs, and his match against DePaul was the same. He won the first set and then opened the door for the guy to come back in the second set, but then he started and finished the third set very strong. We're working a lot on the mental part of the game with Juan. He's doing so much better, and he's practicing extremely hard."

Old Dominion leads the all-time series with South Alabama 2-1, but the two teams haven't met since 2011 when ODU won 4-3 in Norfolk, Va.

The Monarchs own a 12-7 overall record this spring, with a 1-2 mark on the road. Carlos Lopez Villa, ranked No. 96, leads the team with an 18-1 record at the No. 1 spot, including three wins over ranked opponents. Villa teams up with Can Cetinel to post a 14-5 mark at No. 1 doubles.

"Old Dominion is a good team," said Brochu. "They have a new coach, and I think they play with a lot of energy. Once again, it's a team from up north so hopefully it will be a little warm and windy, and that will be to our advantage. It's very nice to finish a season at home. Getting ready for the conference tournament starts this Friday against Old Dominion."
