DELAND, Fla.
– University of South Alabama junior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) picked up his tenth win this season to clinch the men's tennis team's 5-2 win over Stetson on Wednesday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Leitner, ranked No. 94, won 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 over Nathan Debut at the No. 1 spot. With this win, Leitner has taken nine matches in straight sets this season, giving him a 10-1 mark overall.

The Jaguars improved to 10-4 in their spring campaign, while Stetson dropped to 3-4 overall.

"We had a great win today," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Winning the doubles point was very important for us today and we won it in a dominating way. We had great team energy and chemistry."

South Alabama clinched the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions. Senior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) and sophomore Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) got the Jags on the board with an 8-3 win over Debut and Graham Ball at No. 3. Junior Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) followed with an 8-5 victory over Hans Adrian Riseng and Cahit Kapukiran on the No. 1 court.

In singles action, Vaezzadeh gave USA a 2-0 lead when he downed Ball 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 flight. Troglia topped Riseng 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6. Chester Espie answered for the Hatters with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gruindelingh at the No. 4 spot.

"Singles was tough," said Brochu. "It could have easily gone wrong for us. Stetson was fighting very hard and they pushed us to the limit on some courts. Shayann and Juan gave everyone so much confidence by quickly dealing with their opponents."

With Leitner's victory, the Jaguars took a 4-1 lead over the Hatters. Laurynas Antropikas claimed the final point for SU when he defeated Belda 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on the No. 2 court. Freshman Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) closed out the day when he rallied back to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Kapukiran at No. 3.

"Daniel and Tuki were very composed and solid," said Brochu. "They both came back and won their matches. Overall, we had a great team effort today."

South Alabama is back in action Friday March 7 at 1 p.m. when they head to Tampa to take on No. 45 South Florida.
