JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State took advantage of 10 walks issued by Jaguar pitchers for a 5-4 win over University of South Alabama baseball Tuesday at Braddy Field.

Jaguar starter Jared Gates allowed three unearned runs on two hits in five innings, and finished with four strikeouts against six walks. Right-hander Matt Peacock (0-1) took the loss, walking all three batters he faced in relief of Gates. Cameron Carleton tossed three shutout innings, and allowed four hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Alexander Juday (1-0) earned the win with three relief innings, and allowed one unearned run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts. Brandon Gregory tossed a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.

South Alabama gave Gates early run support with two first-inning runs. Bud Collura reached on a one-out walk, moved to third on a single by Hayden Jones and scored on an RBI groundout to second by Matt Wojciechowski for a 1-0 Jag lead. Erik Hindmon reached on a fielding error by JSU third baseman Melvin Rodriguez that scored Jones from second and doubled the USA lead to 2-0 later in the inning.

Stephen Curtis reached on a fielding error by Jaguar shortstop Drew LaBounty to lead off the bottom of the third and scored on an RBI double by Bryce Taylor to cut the USA lead to 2-1. The Tigers tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a passed ball.

USA tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth when Collura doubled and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Jones.

But Jackson State (7-5) answered with the decisive runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Gary Thomas and RBI groundout to shortstop off the bat of Desmond Russell for a 5-3 lead after loading the bases on three consecutive walks.

USA (5-6) scored the game's final run in the top of the eighth when Hindmon advanced to third on a flyout to right field by Adam Ballew, and scored when the relay throw to third sailed out of play.

Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Collura finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to lead USA at the plate. Ballew added a hit and an RBI, and Cole Gleason had one hit. Curtis went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Tigers offensively.

South Alabama will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Starkville, Miss., for a 6:30 p.m. contest at No. 12 Mississippi State. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3, and will be carried on radio live in Mobile on WNSP 105.5 FM.
