Jaguars Close Regular Season with Series Victory over Arkansas State

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (33-21, 17-13 SBC) secured its sixth and final Sun Belt series victory of the 2026 campaign with the rubber game win over Arkansas State (29-24, 12-18 SBC) on Saturday afternoon at Stanky Field.

The Jaguars await final seeding placement in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, but are a guarantee for its tournament opener contest on Wednesday (May 20).

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Jaguars jumped first and did the most damage in the opening frame when four runs scored on three hits. Brennon Wright led off the offense with a double before a walk and a HBP loaded the bases for Blake Guerin who worked the count full and drew a seven pitch walk for an RBI. Mike Young stepped in and singled a run home, followed by Rett Johnson's sacrifice fly to deep left field to plate another. The final run of the inning came off the bat of Marc Stephens who singled home Guerin through the left side to complete the four-spot frame.
  • Arkansas State would erase its zero in the third inning when a solo shot snuck over the left-center field wall.
  • Senior Robert Miranda stepped in and tagged a two-run shot that just missed hitting the scoreboard in left field to add two more runs to the Jaguar total in the home half of the third inning.
  • The Red Wolves would score just once more in the fifth when an RBI single brought in a runner in scoring position.
  • Jacob Haley would enter in the sixth inning and go the distance for the save across 3.1 innings of work to secure the series with a final score of 6-2.

KEY STATS
  • Robert Miranda notched three hits in the regular season finale on his senior day that included a double and a two-run shot - his third of the season.
  • Mike Young's base hit pushed his hit streak to an active team-best nine games.
  • Brennon Wright tallied this third multi-hit game of the series for his 21st of the regular season, where he went 7-12 (.583) in the series.
  • Marc Stephens punched an RBI knock out to left field to push his hit streak to four games.
  • Tyler Smith (W, 2-0) earned the win in 3.2 innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts. Jacob Haley (S, 2) earned his second save of the year in 3.1 innings pitched and fanned four.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"We had five different guys with RBI's and Rob Miranda's two-run home run was huge and gave us a little bit of breathing room. We had chances to extend, and you see why they are the second rated pitching staff in the conference, so credit to their staff. I'm just proud of our guys' effort. All year long these guys have been such a fun group to be around. They work hard, respect the game, and do the right things on and off the field. I love this group and I'm really excited for these guys to see what we can do here moving forward."

ON DECK
The Jaguars open postseason play at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament hosted at DABOS Park on Wednesday, May 20. Opponent TBA.
