MOBILE, Ala. – The only Jaguar softball student-athlete to throw a perfect game in program history, Hannah Campbell, did it again on Wednesday, as the senior retired all 21 Nicholls State batters she faced en route to a 2-0 victory for the No. 14 University of South Alabama softball team.
Â
Campbell, a native of Satsuma, Ala., struck out 12 Colonels and recorded her second shutout of the season, the program-leading 24
th of her career. She improved her record this season to 6-2, while lowering her ERA to 0.83.
Â
Her previous perfect game came against Mississippi Valley State at the NCAA Mobile Regional on May 17, 2013. She had six strikeouts in that performance.
Â
Wednesday's performance also marked Campbell's fifth no-hitter.
Â
The Jaguars move to 20-3 on the year, extending their win streak to four games. Next up for USA is a trip to Stillwater, Okla., where South Alabama will face New Mexico and Oklahoma State (twice) at the Cowgirl Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
Â
Jaguar freshman Chloe Rathburn supplied the winning margin for USA in the bottom of the fourth inning, blasting USA's second hit of the game through a 22-mile per hour wind over the wall in left field, scoring fellow freshman Amanda Minahan, who walked, in the process.
Â
Rathburn tied junior catcher Alex Breeden, who nearly lifted her own homer over the wall were it not for a strong gust, with four to lead all Jaguars this year. Stephanie Pilkington, Kaitlyn Griffith and Emily Messer each supplied a hit apiece, as USA outhit the Colonels, 4-0.
Â
Jackie Johnson took the loss in the circle for Nicholls State, allowing both runs (earned), striking out five and issuing three walks.
