CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas
– Tulane bounced back after losing the doubles point, winning three singles matches in straight sets to top the University of South Alabama men's tennis team 4-1 in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions final on Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The Green Wave picked up its fourth-straight win to improve to 9-2, while the Jaguars drop to 9-4 overall.

"There was some great tennis played today," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "We are disappointed with the result, but I'm very proud of the guys for the way they fought all weekend. We made a big step forward. We started the day on fire. We won a big battle at No. 2 to clinch the point."

After falling behind 1-0 in doubles, Sebastian Rey tied the match at 1-1 when he defeated freshman Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) 6-1, 6-3 on the No. 2 court. Jao Chi-Shan gave Tulane a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over sophomore Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) at No. 4.

Sophomore Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) fell 6-3, 6-4 to Ian Van Cott in the No. 6 flight, and Dominik Koepfer handed No. 94 junior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) his first loss of the season with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot.

"Credit to Tulane, they played very well in singles," said Brochu. "We played well, but we made too many mistakes."

The Jaguars grabbed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 3. Tulane took the first doubles match when Koepfer and Chi-Shan defeated Gruindelingh and junior Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) 8-3 on the No. 1 court. Troglia and senior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) answered with an 8-3 win over Cott and Takuma Ohashi at the No. 3 spot.

Leitner and Jacobs secured the doubles point for the Jags when they outlasted Rey and Alex Van Cott 8-7 (7-5) in the No. 2 flight.

"Overall, it was a great match," said Brochu. "We will practice hard and make a few changes before we play Tulane again in two weeks. This was a great weekend for the Jags. We are progressing in the right direction."

South Alabama is back in action against Stetson on March 5 in Deland, Fla. at 1 p.m.
