MOBILE, Ala. – North Florida took both doubles matches and three singles matches to defeat the University of South Alabama men's tennis team Thursday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Ospreys improve to 2-4 and snap the Jaguars' three-match win streak. South Alabama drops to 4-3.
"It was pretty impressive to see how hard the guys were fighting," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "All 12 players were fighting with the weather. Both teams showed a lot of heart and it would have been easy to just cancel the match because the weather was so bad. Everyone fought hard, there was no complaining and it was just a great match."
With the match tied at 3-3, UNF's
Jack Findel-Hawkins and
Norbert Nemcsek got on the board at No. 1 with a 6-4 win over junior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and sophomore
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina). The Osprey's combo of
Pablo Tellez and
Zachary Goldberg finished off the doubles point and the match with a 6-4 victory over senior
Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) and freshman
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) on the No. 3 court.
"It's always a different feel when you start with singles and then you're tied at 3-3 going into doubles," said Brochu. "Those are the doubles when you will see the most energy. We lost 4-3, but I can't really be mad because the guys fought so hard."
In singles action, junior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) picked up his sixth straight-sets win this season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over
Caio Gomes at the No. 1 spot.
"Daniel is still on a streak of not only winning but controlling the match from the beginning until the end and winning early," said Brochu. "He is doing an excellent job."
Nemcsek tied the match at 1-1 when he topped Belda 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2. Vaezzadeh defeated Goldberg 6-2, 6-4 to give USA a 2-1 lead.
Findel-Hawkins tied the match when he outlasted Jacobs 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 3 flight and
Yannick Zuern gave the Ospreys a 3-2 lead with a 6-4, 5-6 (4-7), 6-1 win over sophomore
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) on the No. 4 court.
Troglia claimed the final singles point when he edged Tellez 3-6, 6-5 (7-5), 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
"Juan made a tremendous comeback after losing the first set and being down in the second, then coming back and winning the tiebreaker," said Brochu. "He definitely stepped up his level of play in his third set. That was awesome to him come up with a big point for us and allow us to go into doubles."
South Alabama is back in action when they host Mercer (9 a.m.) and Jacksonville State (2 p.m.) in a doubleheader Friday.
