NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama's Daniel Leitner has been recognized for his undefeated start to the 2014 spring men's tennis season by being named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Leitner, a junior from Niederfischbach, Germany, earns the award for the third time in his career.

Unbeaten in his first five matches at the No. 1 flight, Leitner has won four of those in straight sets, losing a total of five games in those four wins. He opened the year with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Zach Evenden of Florida A&M and a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Furman's Alex Christ.

His last two wins were also in straight sets, blanking Nicholls State's Bernard Wezeman 6-0, 6-0 and dropping Jackson State's Kashyap Ashok 6-0, 6-2.

Leitner, ranked No. 117 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, picked up his first ranked win of the campaign Jan. 12 against No. 61 Benjamin Lock of Florida State. Leitner prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The Jaguars are in action Thursday afternoon against North Florida at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
