MOBILE, Ala. – Looking to earn their third-straight win, the University of South Alabama men's tennis team will host Southern Miss Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars will end their seven-match homestand as they take on the Golden Eagles, who are 5-4 in their spring campaign. South Alabama owns a 6-3 record overall.
After falling 4-3 to North Florida Feb. 6, USA rebounded with a pair of wins over Mercer (6-1) and Jacksonville State (4-3) on Feb. 7. The Jags won a combined eight singles matches in straight sets.
South Alabama has had almost a two-week break between matches. The original match against Southern Miss was scheduled for Feb. 12, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
"The North Florida match was very exciting to watch," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "We decided to start with singles and it's not often that you see all 12 athletes competing so hard. It came down to doubles when it was tied at 3-3. We knew before the match that their strength was doubles, so we were confident, but we knew they were going to come out and play really hard. When you lose a match like that, of course you're disappointed, but I'm still very proud of the guys."
Niederfischbach, Germany native, and 104th-ranked junior
Daniel Leitner, remains undefeated after earning his eighth-straight victory last week. Seven of those wins have been in straight sets.
"Daniel just continues to be so solid," said Brochu. "Regardless if you're playing a ranked team or not, their No. 1 player is always really good. Daniel played two matches on Friday and both of their top guys were very good. He won both matches in straight sets and put us on the board early. He has been a great asset to the team."
Sophomore
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) now holds a four-match win streak at Nos. 5 and 6. This marks the longest win streak in his collegiate career.
"Juan has been very solid lately," said Brochu. "Against North Florida he came up with a big win for us. We were down 3-2 and he lost the first set, won the second set in a tiebreaker and he dug really deep to win the third set. You always like to see your bottom guys giving you those wins."
South Alabama leads the all-time series with Southern Miss 11-2. Last February, USM claimed their first win over USA since the 1990 season when they topped the Jaguars 4-3. The Golden Eagles won their last match 5-2 over New Orleans on Sunday to snap a two-match losing steak.
"We definitely have to get ready for the match against Southern Miss, especially after what happened last year," said Brochu. "We went to play them and got upset. This year, we are making sure to be ready and work extra hard because we don't want a repeat of last year. We have a really good record over Southern Miss for the past 10 or 15 years, so we have to continue and really be aggressive from the beginning to the end. We have to make sure we win the doubles point really early and just dominate after that."
