MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama soccer team may have had its winning streak broken Sunday but the unbeaten run is still intact as the Jaguars travel to face Texas State and Appalachian State this weekend.
Kickoff for Friday's match in San Marcos, Texas is scheduled for 7 p.m., while the start time in Boone, N.C. on Sunday is slated for noon CST.
Live stats will be available for both matches; subscribers to South Alabama All-Access will be able to watch Friday's match online.
South Alabama completed its five-match homestand Sunday with a 4-0-1 record after defeating Louisiana-Monroe 7-2 on Friday and drawing Louisiana-Lafayette 4-4 on Sunday. The tie snapped USA's eight-match win streak, which is tied for second in school history. The team's current undefeated streak is now tied for second in the record books.
"Like I told the girls, when a tie against, in my opinion, one of the stronger teams in the conference feels like a defeat, then we've shown how far the program has come in a short space of time," Jaguar head coach
Graham Winkworth said. "We can proud of the position we find ourselves in at the moment."
This weekend will mark the team's first road trip since Sept. 14 when the Jaguars swept Mississippi State and Alabama A&M. USA is 3-0 in true road games this year, outscoring the opposition 15-2.
"I think it's good for us and I think we need it," Winkworth said. "On road trips we have a lot of things that we do together and I think it'll be a good opportunity for us to get that bond and continue growing as a family. We need to get that bond extra tight going into a very busy part of the conference schedule."
With its 11 goals over the weekend, South Alabama now ranks first in the nation in scoring, averaging 3.85 goals per game. Freshman
Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) scored twice against Louisiana-Monroe and had two assists vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, bringing her season totals to 13 goals and six assists for 32 points. She ranks second in Division I in points per game (2.54) and fourth in goals per game (1.0).
"I'm really happy with our goal output and I'm even happier with the amount of chances that we're creating," Winkworth stated. "We're not just doing that against weaker opponents; I know we played a couple earlier in the year but this is a tough conference. We just scored 11 goals in two games against very good teams."
Texas State is one of two teams in the Sun Belt Conference with a spotless league record at 3-0 on the strength of three 2-1 wins over Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Appalachian State, and stands 8-3-1 overall. The Bobcats' eight wins have come thanks to a stingy defense that ranks tops in the conference in goals allowed (10) and goals against average (0.81). Offensively, Texas State is tied for seventh in the SBC in scoring (1.67) and doesn't have a player in the league's top 10 in goals, assists or points.
The Bobcats' goalkeeper,
Caitlynn Rinehart is third in the Sun Belt in goals against average (0.82), fifth in save percentage (.796) and tied for fifth in shutouts per game (0.33).
"They are a very organized team and a well-coached team," Winkworth noted. "We're going against another experienced team that have played together for a while and have some excellent players. We know we're going to have to be clinical in front of goal when we do manage to create chances, and we're going to have to make sure that we're organized defensively when they come forward at us. We're looking forward to playing a good Texas State team who are currently challenging at the top of the table."
Appalachian State suffered its first conference loss of the year Sunday at Texas State and hold a 5-7 mark overall in addition to its 2-1 record in league play.
The Mountaineers have struggled to score just like Texas State, tying the Bobcats for seventh in goals scored, but are seventh in goals allowed (1.67) and goals against average (1.63). ASU blanked Arkansas-Little Rock 3-0 and Arkansas State 1-0 to start league play, before the loss to Texas State on Sunday.
"It's going to be a difficult game because we have a lot to take into consideration," Winkworth said. "Not only are we playing two very good opponents, but they're two very different types of teams. App State gave Texas State everything they could handle on the road on Sunday so they're going to be very difficult. We have a lot of traveling to do and we'll be playing on two different surfaces in 48 hours. We have to make sure that we manage the whole weekend very professionally from a coaching standpoint and the girls need the right mental attitude going into each game and give 100 percent all weekend."
