MOBILE, Ala. – After winning all six singles matches in straight sets, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept Alabama State 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improved to 2-0 in their spring campaign, while the Hornets fell to 0-2.
"I thought we played really well today," said USA head coach 
Jaco Keyser. "We took care of business in a professional way and actually incorporated a lot of what we have been doing at practice into the matches. I thought we looked good from a physical standpoint."
Freshman 
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) picked up the first singles point for USA with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 
Irina Cvijovic at No. 3. Freshman
 Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over 
Pauline Denis in the No. 2 flight.
Junior
 Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) clinched the match for South Alabama when she downed 
Arantxia Wihingaarde 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Giving the Jags a 5-0 lead, sophomore
 Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) topped 
Brankica Orlovic 6-0, 6-2 on the No. 4 court and sophomore 
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) defeated 
Brianna Fairley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Junior 
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) won 6-0, 6-0 over Nathalie Lorenco in the No. 5 flight.
"I think we are doing a lot better from a day-to-day basis with the way we approach practice and matches," said Keyser. "I feel like a lot of it has to do with the hard work we put in with our fitness. A lot of the girls are trusting their fitness a lot more and staying in points longer and playing better defense."
With a pair of 8-0 wins under their belt, the Jaguars easily took the doubles point. Valkova paired up with sophomore 
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) to defeat Orlovic and Cvijovic at the No. 2 spot. Sanchez and freshman 
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) quickly followed with a win over 
Melissa Telfer and Lorenco on the No. 3 court.
"Mentally we are in a really good place, especially in how we are approaching these matches," said Keyser. "Sometimes we hurt ourselves when we try to do too much, but when we play high percentage we are actually a very good doubles team."
The Jaguars are back in action Thursday when they head to Florida to take on Bethune-Cookman at noon.
