MOBILE, Ala. – After winning all six singles matches in straight sets, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team swept Alabama State 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improved to 2-0 in their spring campaign, while the Hornets fell to 0-2.
"I thought we played really well today," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. "We took care of business in a professional way and actually incorporated a lot of what we have been doing at practice into the matches. I thought we looked good from a physical standpoint."
Freshman
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) picked up the first singles point for USA with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over
Irina Cvijovic at No. 3. Freshman
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over
Pauline Denis in the No. 2 flight.
Junior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) clinched the match for South Alabama when she downed
Arantxia Wihingaarde 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Giving the Jags a 5-0 lead, sophomore
Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) topped
Brankica Orlovic 6-0, 6-2 on the No. 4 court and sophomore
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) defeated
Brianna Fairley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Junior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) won 6-0, 6-0 over Nathalie Lorenco in the No. 5 flight.
"I think we are doing a lot better from a day-to-day basis with the way we approach practice and matches," said Keyser. "I feel like a lot of it has to do with the hard work we put in with our fitness. A lot of the girls are trusting their fitness a lot more and staying in points longer and playing better defense."
With a pair of 8-0 wins under their belt, the Jaguars easily took the doubles point. Valkova paired up with sophomore
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) to defeat Orlovic and Cvijovic at the No. 2 spot. Sanchez and freshman
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) quickly followed with a win over
Melissa Telfer and Lorenco on the No. 3 court.
"Mentally we are in a really good place, especially in how we are approaching these matches," said Keyser. "Sometimes we hurt ourselves when we try to do too much, but when we play high percentage we are actually a very good doubles team."
The Jaguars are back in action Thursday when they head to Florida to take on Bethune-Cookman at noon.
