MOBILE, Ala
. – University of South Alabama sophomore Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) earned two victories, including a win at No. 1 singles to secure the match in the Jaguars' 7-0 win over Jackson State Saturday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars are now 1-0 overall, while the Tigers drop to 0-2.

"It is really nice to get a win," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. "We saw some good tennis here and there. The rust showed, but all-in-all it was a good day."

Meszarsova teamed up with junior Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) to clinch the doubles point with an 8-1 over Kesica Jayapalan and Angela Condorelli at the No. 1 spot. Meszarsova later outlasted Anastasiia Zviahintseva 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1 to secure the match.

Junior Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) and freshman Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) picked up the first win of the day with their 8-0 victory over Harshini Reddy and Akshatha Ananth at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) and freshman Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) topped Zviahintseva and Julie Angermann 8-4 on the No. 3 court.

The Jaguars picked up four singles wins in straight sets and Valkova, Mitta and Martin dropped only three games total. Valkova downed Reddy 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 flight, followed by Mitta's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ananth at No. 3. Martin defeated Jayapalan 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.

"I think everyone did a good job today," said Keyser. "More importantly, in situations where things weren't going our way, we competed really hard and actually out-competed our opponents. So that was nice to see this early in the season."

Freshman Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) edged Angermann 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) on the No. 4 court, while Sanchez won 6-3, 7-5 over Condorelli at No. 6.

"Our game plan for tomorrow is the same as today," said Keyser. "We need to come out and work on our doubles. In singles, we need to tighten up a little bit and not give away so many free points. If we bring the same level of competitiveness and effort as we did today then good things will happen for us."

South Alabama is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Alabama State.
