MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team swept doubles and won five singles matches in straight sets to secure a 6-1 victory over Jackson State Saturday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
USA won their second match in a row to improve to 3-2 in their spring campaign and handed JSU their third straight loss.
"Our goals for today were to have high energy and a killer instinct," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "Since we have two matches this weekend we didn't want to be out here this afternoon for four hours. The guys showed a lot of energy in doubles and carried it over to singles. We really took care of business on most courts. Sometimes it is good to have easier matches that allow us to work on different things. The guys did really good today."
The Jaguars took the doubles point with a pair of 6-0 wins. Senior
Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) and sophomore
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) set the tone for the match downing
Camilo Patino and
Carlos Martinez on the No. 3 court. In the No. 2 flight, junior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and sophomore
Quincy Olij (Alkmaar, Netherlands) clinched the point with their victory over
Hernan Geria and
Ryan Swanier.
Junior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and Leitner dropped just two games total to give the Jags a 3-0 lead. Belda picked up a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Swanier at No. 2, followed by No. 117 Leitner's 6-0, 6-2 victory over
Kashyap Ashok at the No. 1 spot.
Freshman
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) secured the match for the Jags defeating
Jose Lugue 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 4 court.
"Tuki played a solid match," said Brochu. "He was nervous at first, got broken once but then relaxed and started dictating the point with his forehand. He won 11 games in a row to close the match."
Gruindelingh topped Martinez 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3, while Vaezzadeh downed Patino 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 flight. Geria picked up the only win for the Tigers after taking a 6-4, 6-4 win over sophomore
Sean Robinson (Diamondhead, Miss.) on the No. 6 court.
The Jaguars return to action Sunday as they host Alabama State at 1 p.m.
