MEN’S TENNIS HOSTS JACKSON STATE AND ALABAMA STATE THIS WEEKEND

MOBILE, Ala. – Continuing its seven-match homestand, the University of South Alabama men's tennis team will host Jackson State and Alabama State this weekend at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars will host the Tigers Saturday at 11 a.m. and the Hornets Sunday at 1 p.m.

"Since we have two matches this weekend our number one goal is that we don't want to be on the court for four hours," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "We want to come in, play hard, get the win and get out. We need to save some energy for the following match."

South Alabama enters the weekend with a 2-2 record, coming off a 6-1 victory over Nicholls State last Saturday. Senior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) clinched the match for the Jags when he defeated Lukas Clemens 6-4, 6-1. USA picked up four singles wins in straight sets.

"We knew that Nicholls State was going to come out really hungry," said Brochu. "I thought we had a slow start in doubles, but we really caught up and it came down to tiebreakers in doubles and we responded really well. We played aggressive. We got the doubles point and that set the tone for singles. A 6-1 win over Nicholls is good and we just have to make sure that we stay on top of teams like that for the rest of the season."

The Tigers opened their spring season with 7-0 losses to both Mississippi State and Tulane. Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between USA and JSU.

"I think we are the favorite this weekend, but at the same time that will give us an opportunity to work on some different aspects of our game," said Brochu. "We should have a little bit of a cushion if we want to try new things, but we still need to take care of business from the beginning to the end."

South Alabama leads the all-time series with Alabama State 1-0, but the two teams have not met since the Jags won 9-0 in 1983. The Hornets enter the match Sunday with a 0-1 record in their spring campaign. ASU fell 7-0 to Mississippi State last Saturday.
