MOBILE, Ala. – After going 3-1-1 on a five-match road swing, University of South Alabama women's soccer returns home for the first time since its season-opening victory over Mississippi State on August 23 to host Southern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Â
USA (4-1-1) split last weekend against two Conference USA opponents, defeating Southern Miss, 3-2, in overtime by way of a Lauren Allison golden goal, before falling by a reverse scoreline at UAB after going down three goals in the first half an hour.
Â
Hoping not to make a habit of it, South Alabama could find its way back into form against a winless Southern outfit tomorrow night at The Cage where, in 2011, USA defeated SU, 5-1, in the teams' only previous meeting.
Â
Current USA student-athletes Clarissa Hernandez, Kristyn Thacker and Tatum Parry all tallied a goal apiece in the contest, which USA led, 2-1, at the break, before Thacker's goal shortly after the interval prompted two others, all in the space of 20 minutes.
Â
Lauren Allison recently recorded another three-goal weekend, and the freshman forward is currently third in the NCAA in goals (8), goals per game (1.60) and points (16). Her 3.20 points-per-game average is fifth-best in the nation.
Â
The Jaguars are currently tied for 37th in the nation in scoring offense, having scored 15 goals through six matches for a 2.50 per-game average.
Â
USA currently owns the best record in the Sun Belt Conference, slightly ahead of Arkansas State, which is 3-1-2. UALR and Louisiana-Monroe also have three wins this year but have lost three and four matches, respectively.
Â
South Alabama has two shutouts on the year, tied for the most amongst Sun Belt schools and has forced 33 total corner kicks, second-most.
Â
Southern is winless on the year in four contests, having only managed a single point by way of a 1-1 draw to Louisiana-Lafayette on August 30. The three losses came to Nicholls State, UALR and Lamar.
Â
SU has only attempted 10 shots on the year and has been outscored by its opponents, 17-3. Freshman forward Kasey Gamble has scored two goals this year to lead the club with four points. Shelby Carbin scored the other on her only shot attempt of the season.
Â
Kerrin Hall and Sarah Forde have split time between the posts this year for Southern, but Forde has given up nearly five times the number of goals as her counterpart.
Â
SU has only managed a single corner this season compared to their opponents' 29.
Â
The Jaguars' tie places them ahead of all league competitors in the SWAC's Western division. SU fell to Nicholls State, 8-1, to Nicholls State at the beginning of the season. USA tied Nicholls in Thibodaux, La., 1-1.

Â
Former USA student-athlete Kristen Sutton came off the bench to record a brace in University of South Alabama women's soccer's season-opening victory over Southern at The Cage.
Â
Sutton converted on either side of the interval, as the Jaguars extended a 2-1 halftime lead to a 5-1 final, thanks to additional goals from current USA student-athletes Clarissa Hernandez, Kristyn Thacker and Tatum Perry.
Â
USA outshot SU, 30-2, in the match while handing SU its first loss of the season.
Â
Southern's Rekeia Gallien put the Lady Jags on the board early, nailing a shot from 18 yards out off a cross from Kendra Monroe in the second minute of the match.
Â
Hernandez equalized on a penalty two minutes later, and Sutton deposited her first goal on a Thacker pass six minutes away from halftime to give the hosts a lead at the break.
Â
Thacker finished off Morgan Motes's effort 10 minutes into the second period to push the score to 3-1 before Sutton and Perry scored in the 67th and 77th.
Â
South Alabama's Melissa Drish picked up the win in goal.
