DISMAL START TOO MUCH FOR SOCCER TO OVERCOME IN BIRMINGHAM

Jordan Duncan scored her second career goal on Sunday in USA's 3-2 loss to UAB.
Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB scored three goals in the first half an hour on Sunday at West Campus Field, and a late University of South Alabama rally came up short, as the Jaguars dropped their first contest of the year to the Blazers, 3-2.

USA (4-1-1) found itself three goals down after Blazer goals in the 12th, 15th and 28th minutes, but Jordan Duncan stole one back moments before halftime to renew Jaguar energy.

Fifteen minutes into the second period, Lauren Allison scored for the eighth time this year to draw the visitors closer, but UAB's defense and keeper Courtnie Northern turned away any chance of a USA equalizer. The Jaguars tripled their first half shot total during the rally.

"It was a tough game today, and I have to do a better of job of making sure the girls understand the gameplan," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth. "I feel we had a strong gameplan, the girls ran their socks off in the second half, and we're a bit unlucky not to get something out of today."

Kimberly Fincher finished off Ashley Naumoff's pass to put the hosts ahead, and Amy Harrison doubled UAB's lead three minutes later, finishing a corner kick to the left of USA keeper Melissa Drish. Paige Hanks converted from the top of the box just over 10 minutes later to push the Blazer lead to 3-0.

Duncan won in a scramble in the UAB area minutes before the halftime whistle, and she tapped past Blazer starting keeper Angelica Jimenez to give USA a boost.

The Blazers pounded USA's defense in the first 45, outshooting the visitors, 11-3, but the Jags reversed that number in the second period, pouring on nine shots to UAB's three and forcing four corner kicks to the opposition's one.

"We made some tweaks at halftime, and the girls ran their socks off in the second period; this will be a learning experience for our girls," Winkworth explained. "Part of that came from the energy our traveling crowd gave us. We were very well-represented in Birmingham today, and we'd like to thank those who traveled for their support."

The Jaguars finished their five-match road span with a 3-1-1 record. USA will return to Mobile for a three-game homestand beginning with a Tuesday night affair versus Southern at The Cage at 7 p.m.
