MOBILE, Ala. – Linsey Snavely turned in a hat trick, and three scored their first-ever collegiate goals on Sunday, as University of South Alabama women's soccer capped its third win in as many matches at The Cage this week with an 11-0 victory over Alabama A&M.
Â
USA (7-1-1) racked up 50 shots on the day, while holding the Lady Bulldogs to only six.
Â
Redshirt freshman Sarah Hay was forced into only two saves in her collegiate debut, making her the third different Jaguar goalkeeper to record a shutout this week after Lauren Arnold was tested little in an 8-0 USA win over Southern on Tuesday and Melissa Drish saved three Murray State shots on Friday in a 2-0 win.
Â
The Jaguars, entering the weekend ranked 14th in the NCAA in scoring offense, met their three-goal-per-game average in the first 23 minutes on Sunday, but struggled with stringing combinations together and beating Alabama A&M's high back line. USA was flagged offside 10 times in the first half alone.
Â
Clarissa Hernandez put USA on the board in the eighth minute, finishing off Lauren Allison cross that was helped along by Jordan Duncan. Snavely netted the first of her three 12 minutes later when she slammed in Monique Autmon's pass after entering the contest only five minutes prior.
Â
Four minutes later, the freshman Autmon scored her first goal in a Jaguar shirt, depositing a rebound chance that Lauren Allison sent off the right post.
Â
"I was a little disappointed with the way we came out; we started a bit sluggish, and didn't give our opponents the respect they deserved," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth. "We talked about that at halftime. I believe you should show intensity for 90 minutes and show your opposition respect. We put our foot down on the pedal in the second half and worked a lot harder."
Â
A more eager Jaguar outfit took the field in the second half, firing 31 total shots on the Lady Bulldog defense and working the visitors wide.
Â
Senior Stacie Bevens scored her first collegiate goal two minutes into the second period, and then converted again 10 minutes later after Alyssa Mayer collected the first of her two in the 52nd minute, the Jaguars doubling their advantage to 6-0.
Â
Less than a minute after Bevens tallied her brace, Mayer did the same to push the lead to 7-0. Snavely then twice fired past AAMU keeper Marissa Oehler in the space of seven minutes to complete her hat trick, the second of her career.
Â
Kristyn Thacker scored her first goal of the season in the 84th minute, and Carlaine Myers netted the first of her Jaguar career three minutes later to cap the scoring.
Â
"In the second half, we managed to tire the opponent out by moving the ball out wide and putting crosses in, and, finally, putting some in the back of the net," Winkworth explained. "I'm happy with the three wins (this week), all shutouts. We used three goalkeepers this week, and it was nice for all of them to get a shutout. Â Our defense has been working hard."
Â
USA will now look to perhaps its toughest weekend of the season, as the Jaguars travel to South Florida on Friday and North Florida on Sunday. The weekend will mark the completion of USA's non-conference schedule, with Texas State visiting The Cage on the 27th to mark the beginning of Sun Belt Conference play.
Â
"South Florida and North Florida is really going to be one of the toughest weekends we will face, and that's the reason we put them in the weekend before conference starts," Winkworth said. "South Florida are flying in their non-conference schedule right now against very good opponents. They have some national team players that are very strong. North Florida played South Florida close the other week, and they've got a very big, deep squad. It's going to be a challenging weekend on the road, but we're excited to get to work this week to prepare for them."
