MEMPHIS, Tenn.
– Memphis’ Lucas Vmak and David O’Leary teamed up to clinch the doubles point and earned a point each in singles to give the No. 36 Tigers a 4-0 win over South Alabama Sunday at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

The Tigers win their fourth straight to move to 11-7; the Jaguars close out the regular season at 10-13.

“I liked the way we played today,” USA head coach Nick Brochu said. “We spoke before the match about playing today like we want to play next week at the (Sun Belt) Conference Tournament. We wanted high energy and aggressive play. Memphis is a very powerful team and we needed to match their style in order to have a chance to beat them.”

After Memphis’ 59th-ranked pair of David O’Hare and Joe Salisbury defeated senior Alex Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) and junior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) 8-3 at No. 2, Vmak and O’Leary put the Tigers up 1-0 with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over senior Cody Hall (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina).

O’Leary added to the lead in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Troglia at No. 5 and Connor Glennon defeated Bernard 6-1, 6-3.

Vmak finished off the match at No. 3 in straight sets against Vaezzadeh, winning 6-4, 6-3.

“Playing without Daniel (Leitner) was still a challenge, but our guys responded well today and went ‘all in.’ We played great doubles and singles,” Brochu said. “This is probably one of the best matches we have played this year.

“Everybody was cheering for each other and felt confident,” Brochu continued. “At one point, we were winning on four courts,” Brochu said. “It was a very close match and I know Memphis got scared. When the match was clinched by Memphis, Cody was three points away from winning and Gerhard (Gruindelingh) was already up a break in the third set. Playing this close to a top-40 team is a good boost of confidence before the conference tournament. We need to maintain this level for the next week before battling for the championship.”

The Jaguars will compete in the Sun Belt Championships starting Thursday in Lafayette, La.
