MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team won four singles matches in straight sets to clinch a 5-2 victory over Nicholls State Thursday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars improved to 7-4 on the season, while the Colonels dropped to 9-4 overall.

“It was a hard fought win today,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “Nicholls State has been having a good season. They’re a scrappy team and they played hard.”

Sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) earned two victories for the Jaguars when she blanked Rachel Howie 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 3 court and teamed up with freshman Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) to clinch the doubles point with a 9-7 win over Howie and Eva Castiglioni.

“Emily really stepped up in singles and had a good, solid output,” said Keyser. “Hopefully she can come out and do that again tomorrow.”

Sophomore Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) picked up another point for the Jags with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Isla Brock in the No. 4 flight.

Sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) secured the match for South Alabama when she topped Castiglioni 6-3, 6-1 on the No. 5 court. Freshman Cinta Maria Papke (Flein, Germany) rounded out the day with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Emma Pitre at No. 6.

The Colonels picked up their two points with straight-sets victories at the top two singles spots. Natalia Cardiff dropped Meszarosova 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 and Marie Aubert won 6-4, 6-4 over sophomore Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) on the No. 1 court.

In doubles action, Ghermani and Krachok defeated Aubert and Brock 8-2 in the No. 2 flight. Cardiff and Catherine Gauthier picked up the first win for the Colonels with an 8-6 win over Papke and Martin at No. 3.

“We play Tennessee Martin tomorrow and they are a team who competes very hard,” said Keyser. “Hopefully we can match them with our competitiveness and keep on trying to get our level of play a little higher in matches.”

USA is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face Tennessee Martin at 1 p.m.
