MEN’S TENNIS DROPS 4-0 DECISION AT TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas
– After narrowly edging out the University of South Alabama for the doubles point, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s tennis team took the next three singles matches in straight sets to claim a 4-0 victory Monday morning at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The Islanders earn their fourth straight win to even their record at 5-5 while the Jaguars fall to 6-7.

“Today was really hard,” USA head coach Nick Brochu said. “We had winds over 25 miles per hour and it was almost unplayable. But the guys didn't use this as an excuse and competed hard.

“It is disappointing to lose after playing so well in the last two matches. We may have been tired a little, but we will regroup and get ready to play at home.”

TAMUCC, who won the H-E-B Tournament of Champions over the weekend, built on that momentum and lost no more than three games in any of the three singles matches.

The battle for the doubles point was much closer. The Islanders won at No. 2 doubles 8-3, but USA senior Alex Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) and junior Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) answered with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 to even it up at 1-1.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took the doubles point when Peter Nagy and Odon Barta squeaked out a 9-7 victory over sophomore Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and freshman Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa).

“We were in position to win the doubles point but we made some errors that cost us the match at No. 1,” Brochu said.

The Islanders took a 3-0 lead early in singles with a pair of 6-2, 6-3 victories at Nos. 3 and 4. Gergo Weidinger defeated Gruindelingh on the No. 3 court and Guillaume Rauseo topped Vaezzadeh 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

Ricardo Mayagoitia dropped just two games at No. 5, clinching the match against freshman Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 6-0, 6-2.

“In singles, it was a good fight,” Brochu said. “I think we would have split the singles 3-3, but that is why the doubles point was so important.”

South Alabama returns home to host Nicholls State Thursday at 1 p.m.
