LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team dropped just one set in singles in the Jaguars’ 4-0 shutout of Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday afternoon at Cajun Courts.
USA improves to 13-6 on the year while ULL falls to 12-10.
“Today was a tough battle and an important win against a Louisiana-Lafayette team who is having a good year,” Jaguar head coach
Jaco Keyser said. “From a conference standpoint, this is also a big win that could help us solidify a top four seed for the upcoming Sun Belt Tournament.”
The Jags took the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 victories. Sophomores
Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) and
Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) drew first blood with a win at No. 2, and sophomore
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and freshman
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 flight.
In singles action, sophomore
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) dropped only four games on the No. 5 court to give South Alabama a 2-0 lead, topping
Juliette Clement 6-3, 6-1. Ghermani also won in straight sets but needed a second-set tiebreaker to dispatch
Bailey VanDyke 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Meszarosova finished off the whitewashing in three sets at No. 1. After splitting the first two sets with
Sophie Van den Aarssen 6-3 each, Meszarosova won the final set 6-3.
“Once again we did a great job competing on match day,” Keyser noted. “Having said that, this team needs to understand that regardless of youth we need more focus, discipline and drive outside of match day if we are going to scare anyone this last part of the season.
“The positive results are nice but we are still playing way below our capabilities and need to clean things up fast.”
South Alabama continues its 10-match road trip Thursday at USC Upstate.
