ORLANDO
- Boston University snapped the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team’s three-match win streak Thursday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over the Jaguars at the Star Island Resort Tennis Club.

BU improves to 6-4 overall while USA drops to 9-5.

“Today was a frustrating loss because it was a great opportunity to gain confidence against a solid team,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser.

With the Jaguars and the Terriors tied at 3-3, Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis defeated sophomore Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) 7-6, 6-4 on the No. 4 court to secure the win for Boston.

After BU won the doubles point, Lauren Davis and Vivien Laszloffy made it 3-0 with wins at the top two spots. Laszloffy downed freshman Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 flight, followed by Davis’ 6-1, 6-3 win over sophomore Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) at the No. 1 spot.

South Alabama responded with the next three wins, two in straight sets. Sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) topped Jessi Linero 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5, sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sami Lieb on the No. 3 court and freshman Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) outlasted Kim McCallum 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 flight.

“I give credit to Boston,” said Keyser. “They put score board pressure on us by taking care of business at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. It was nice to see the girls respond and make a match out it, but to be honest there are no moral victories at this time of the year.”

In doubles action, Newton and Meszarosova picked up the first win of the day with an 8-1 win over Athanasiadis and Linero at the No. 1 spot. Davis and McCallum topped Martin and Sanchez on the No. 3 court.

Ghermani and Krachok lost for the first time this season with an 8-2 loss to Laszloffy and Lieb at No. 2.

“We need a quick turn around with another tough opponent in Richmond tomorrow so we will have to digest this one fast and get ready for them,” said Keyser.

The Jaguars will be back in action Friday when they take on Richmond at 11 a.m.
