WOMEN’S TENNIS TRAVELS TO FLORIDA FOR THREE MATCH ROAD TRIP

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team will take its win streak to Florida and open a three-match road swing Thursday in Orlando.

USA will take on Boston University on Thursday and Richmond on Friday at 11 a.m. in Orlando. Following an off day, the Jags will travel to Tampa to face Hillsborough Community College on Sunday at 9 a.m.

After a 5-2 victory over Lamar Tuesday, the Jaguars (9-4) have won three in a row and five of their last six, with the only loss coming to No. 28 Tulsa.

“Any time you win three in a row, you start building momentum and a little bit of confidence,” Jaguar head coach Jaco Keyser said. “I’ve been saying it for a while: this team is right around the corner from playing good tennis and hopefully the confidence of winning a few matches will really push things along.”

Tuesday South Alabama got singles victories at the bottom four spots in the lineup, including a three-set win by sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.), who rallied from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win 1-6, 6-4, (10-8). She has won her last three matches at No. 5 and has a team-high nine wins this spring.

“Hopefully the rest of the girls can watch and see the mindset of hanging around and competing,” Keyser said about Martin’s comeback. They all know if they can win matches when they don’t have their ‘A’ game just through competing, good things will happen once they start feeling the ball a little bit better.”

Boston University followed a season-opening three-match win streak with three straight losses, but will go for its third consecutive victory Thursday against the Jags. Reigning America East Conference Player of the Week Lauren Davis is 5-4 at No. 1 for the Terriers and has won her last two outings in straight sets.

Richmond, the defending Atlantic 10 champion, enters Friday’s tilt with at 3-9 with a six-match losing streak, including a 5-2 defeat to BU on Monday. The Spiders will be completing a season-opening 13-match road trip; Richmond will play its first home match of the year March 21.

“Those two teams are similar to Lamar,” Keyser said. “You’re going to have to play good tennis to beat them. If not, it’s going to be a long day. We’ve played Boston University a few times before and have had great matches with them. But the key for us is to keep on improving our own games.”

South Alabama has faced Hillsborough CC once in its history. The Jags defeated the Hawks 7-0 in Mobile last season.
