TAMPA, Fla.
– South Florida’s Oliver Pramming won in three sets at No. 1 to give the Bulls a narrow 4-3 win over the University of South Alabama men’s tennis team Monday afternoon at USF Varsity Courts.

The Bulls improve to 6-5 while the Jaguars, ranked No. 58 by the ITA, drop to 8-8.

“The guys fought really hard today,” USA head coach Nick Brochu said. “We are very disappointed to lose a close match, but it was a big fight out there. It was a very good match.”

Pramming lost the first set 6-4 to No. 60 Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), but rallied to win the final two 6-3, 6-3 to break the 3-3 tie and clinch the match for USF.

After the Jags won the doubles point, freshman Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) made it 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 over Federico Sabogal.

The Bulls answered with the next three wins—all in straight sets—to take a 3-2 lead. Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz defeated Alex Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, Guillermo De Vilchez claimed a 6-4, 6-2 over Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) on the No. 4 court, and Ravi Patel topped sophomore Blake Gregor (Griffith, New South Wales, Australia) 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5.

Senior Cody Hall (Albuquerque, N.M.) picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Everth Dzib at No. 6 to even the match at 3-3 before Pramming’s victory.

“We talked about putting ourselves in position to win,” Brochu said. “I thought we did a good job with that, but we couldn't close the match at certain positions. We definitely had chances, being up a break in the third set of the final match, but USF played some good points.”

The doubles point also came down to the final match. USF’s 56th-ranked team of Pramming and Gonzalez-Muniz won 8-3 at No. 1 but Bernard and Vaezzadeh answered with a 9-8 (8-6) victory at No. 3.

Leitner and Gregor put the Jags up 1-0 with a tight 9-7 win over Patel and De Vilchez.

“It was a hot, long day,” Brochu said. “The doubles took almost an hour and a half. We played well and came out with a big point.”

South Alabama will travel to Jacksonville to face North Florida Tuesday at 1 p.m. CDT.

“We need to regroup and get ready for UNF who is similar to USF,” Brochu said. “It will be a good match.”
