RUBIT NAMED FINALIST FOR LOU HENSON AWARD

BOSTON – CollegeInsider.com has announced the finalists for the Lou Henson Award and University of South Alabama junior Augustine Rubit is among the 25 named for the award given to the top mid-major player in the country.

The award is named after former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach Lou Henson, who won 779 games—11th most in NCAA history—and is one of 12 coaches to take two schools to the final four.

Rubit is the only Sun Belt Conference player included on the list. Former winners of the award include Kyle O’Quinn of Norfolk State and Matt Howard of Butler.

A Houston, Texas native, Rubit leads the Sun Belt in rebounding (10.9 rpg) and is second in scoring (19.0 ppg) and double-doubles (15).

He has reached the 30-point plateau three times this season, including a career-high 34 points Jan. 17 against Louisiana at Monroe, and has already set a new school record for free throws in a season. Earlier in the year Rubit became the 14th member of South Alabama’s 1,000-point club and currently resides in the school’s top 10.

The 2013 Award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.

For the second straight year CollegeInsider.com is working with Point3 Basketball to promote the Lou Henson award “fan vote,” which will constitute 33% of the final vote.
