TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
– University of South Alabama's historic season came to an end on Friday after the Jaguars were knocked out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament by top-ranked Florida State, 5-0, at Seminole Soccer Complex.

Carson Pickett recorded a brace to complement Megan Campbell's two-goal, one assist performance and help the Atlantic Coast Conference champions advance in their 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

"I'm really proud of the girls tonight," said USA head coach Graham Winkworth. "They have worked extremely hard. I think we came out a little shaky, and, unfortunately, conceded some early goals with all the nerves. This is the first time that our program has been in this situation, so it's understandable to have those nerves.

"What I enjoy most and respect the most about Florida State is that they are a very well-coached team," Winkworth added. "They are class acts on the field as well. They are top-class players that are clearly experienced, but what makes me like Florida State over a lot of teams in the ACC is just the style of soccer they play."

USA (14-6-3) concludes its most successful season ever, appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after earning an automatic bid for winning the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title, also a first for the club.

Twenty-three matches sets a USA single-season record. USA's 14 wins are the second-most in a season for the program. Seniors Clarissa Hernandez, Jess Oram and Shelby Owen each made their 84th start for South Alabama, extending their records for most games played at USA.

Florida State (19-1-3) scored early and often on a cool, breezy night in Tallahassee, Pickett collecting the first of her two in the ninth minute when she deposited Berglind Thorvaldsdottir's cross from six yards out of Melissa Drish's net.

Kassey Kallman doubled the host advantage seven minutes later, knocking on Campbell's throw-in to an empty far post. Then, Campbell made it 3-0 five minutes later when she struck a free kick from 45 yards out over Drsh's head.

Pickett wasted no time after the half in adding to FSU's advantage, converting just over a minute into the second period after Drish could do little more than put a finger to the shot.

Nora Kervroedan capped scoring at 5-0 less than a minute from the final whistle when she placed a one-timer into the far post after a spell of Seminole combination play involving Campbell and Marta Bakowska-Mathews.

The losing margin was the most for USA since a 9-0 loss to Alabama on Aug. 31, 2012. FSU outshot South Alabama, 20-3, in the match and won in corner count, 8-0. Drish made seven saves on the night. The Seminoles recorded their 13th shutout in 23 matches this year, moving to 28-1-0 at home in NCAA Tournament play.
